Lately Claire has discovered new and exciting things around the house.

#1. Toilet paper. Every time she sees a bathroom door open she make a B-line to the toilet paper.

#2. Door to the pantry. If we leave it cracked she manages to open it and starts pulling down everything from the bottom shelf.

#3. Single pack of pringles. I bought a box of 36 individual pringle cups from Sams and Claire gets each one (out of the pantry) and bites holes into the tops. It look like little mice have been eating at our chips.

#4. Everything on the floor!! Her hands are like little suction cups and she manages to get every microscopic piece of dirt, crumb or fuzz in her mouth.

#5. The best for last is the SHOWER !! Claire has learned to open the shower door and has attempted several times to crawl in. Each time I have caught her and managed to head her off.... until now. Shannon had turned the shower on for Cathryn (she thinks she is a big girl and can get in the shower by herself) and began to change Davis. Quiet, sneaky Claire manages to crawl behind Shannon, open the door and get in. It was very cute and we all had a good laugh. Cathryn was so excited because she got in too and they both played in the shower.

Our playground was looking trashy. Dead grass and weeds were everywhere. SOOOO this past weekend we cleaned it all up. Shannon enclosed the area and filled it in with rubber mulch. Now everyone can play and not get so dirty. Davis can take his shoes off and swing without hurting his feet :o) All is Happy and not Trashy !!

Sweaty Bands are wonderful. Keeps the hair out of my face, stops the nasty salty sweat and doesn't budge !! Amphipod is a great water bottle because it contours to your hand and it has a handy pocket for my keys :o) Well worth it !!

Monday Davis and I drove to Knoxville for a clinic on special needs equipment. Several reps. were there along with a PT and the Orthopedic Dr. They quickly began looking and evaluating his wheelchair while the ortho. Dr. talked 90 miles a minute. As they moved, measured and weighed Davis I addressed my concerns.

#1 His wheelchair back and seat have gotten too small.

#2. The stander we currently have (a Rabbit by Snug Seat ) is too small. He was 3 when we got it.

#3. What kind of car seat should he be in ? Davis is too big for a booster with a harness and likes to scoot down.

#4. Is his walker the right size? etc...

At the end of our session. This was our conclusion:

#1. Order a new seat and back for wheelchair

#2. New Blue Dynamic stander by Rifton (see attch. below)

#3. New Churchill Booster seat with pommel only and simply use the car seat belt (see attch. below) He doesn't need all the extra support offered.
#4. His walker is fine....

OK !! It's time... Claire is almost 9 months old and it's time to get moving. I have lost all my baby/Little Debbie weight and I need a new goal. RUNNING. Yes, I said it. My new goal is to run. And I mean past the mail box. To some this my come easy. You either have it or you don't. Well, I DON'T !! Until now. I am running with Fleet Feet 2 days a week and we are getting ready for a race in May. This is a GOAL !! Next will be the Crazy Eight race in June.. Running with Dad at Disney in Nov. and River Run in Jax. (that is reasonable) . Each race is a step toward my big Final Goal..... 1/2 marathon at Disney in Jan. 2011. Dust off those runnig shoes dad. We have got a lot of work to do. I am excited and totally ready. It is an awsome feeling when you push yourself and discover nothing is impossible !! Lord give me strength :o)

Yes Claire is Up and Climbing !! She is pulling up on anything and everything..... I really didn't think she would gravitate to the stairs soooo quickly. Boy was I wrong !!! And she has already fallen out of her crib :o( Thanks to her Daddy who didn't put the rail up. I am sure that will not happen again. Thank the Lord babies are so tough. OK I am admitting I have gray in my hair !! Yes my mom told me at Christmas it was there, but I thought I could hide it . NOT ANYMORE.... I pulled several strands out from my forehead this morning. Since my hair is so dark (not naturally) it is really starting to show. I really don't know what my true hair color is. There has been some form of color or highlights on my hair for about 18 years ..... I don't even want to begin to think of how much money I have spent. Well Thursday is the day !! My hair lady will solve the problem and the gray will disappear (for about 5 weeks).

Disney Christmas 2009

This Christmas we decided to take Cathryn to Disney World for a few days. We needed to spend some time with just her. Davis always has our attention and since June Claire has been the focus. Perfect timing since we were in Fl. at my parents. And who better to watch Davis and Claire than Pawpaw and Nana. Disney is absolutely beautiful at Christmas. The lights, parades, castle, fireworks and decorations were breathtaking.

It seemed too easy with just one child. My mind is always thinking ahead and doesn't stop.... What is Davis going to eat and where? Does he need something to drink or his diaper changed (where can I change him)? Are his legs/braces bothering him? Does he need to stand/stretch or is he tired etc... Claire is 6 months old so you know what that entails. This was a piece of cake !!!! Cathryn loved it and we had a fabulous time :o)

I can't believe that 8 years ago today Davis was born. Where has the time gone? This is a child that Dr's said was "incompatible with life and would not survive birth." We all prepared for the worst and thought we would never bring him home. Some days that seems like a lifetime ago. Here we are 8 years later and I can't imagine life without Davis. I praise the Lord for such a sweet miracle. Davis is truly a blessing and a gift !! Happy Birthday to my precious Little Buddy :o)

Several times a year our family tries to get away to Gatlinburg and Dollywood. My favorite is always Fall. During Oct. Dollywood has a gospel/harvest celebration and is just beautiful with fall decorations, crafts, music, food and activities ... Not to mention fun rides for the entire family. Davis loves the excitement and we look forward to each visit :o)

It's official Claire is rolling over.... She has been doing it off and on, but since the weekend she has not STOPPED !! Everytime I turn around she has rolled over and gotten stuck. Today when I went to check on her durning her nap she had fallen asleep on her tummy. I had to take a picture. We have now entered a new stage. NO more lying there and not moving...... Senior Moment

Have you ever had a senior moment? The kind of moment were you know you are not crazy, but you feel like you are. Yes, I know a few specific people reading this have. I won't mention any names, but you know who you are. Well today was the day for me. I had plans to make a pumpkin topiary for my front porch. I am not very crafty, but I can copy like the best of them. I went to Michael's and bought everything needed. When I came upon the isle with the glue guns and sticks I said, "No, I have plenty of that at home. I have a glue gun and a 1000 glue sticks." When I passed the fake pumpkins I said, "Nope I have those too." Finally I got home and began to make my topiary. The only problem was #1 my pumpkins were no where to be found and #2 my glue gun/ sticks were missing. I was very perplexed because I new I had just seen them. I could picture them in my head and I new where the should be, but they were no where to be found. So the hunt began !!! No closet, drawer, cabinet or bed was left un-turned. How could I loose 3 PUMPKINS and 1000 glue sticks. There is not a happy ending to this story. I still have not found my pumpkins or glue gun/sticks. I had a senior moment and it was scary because I know I saw those darn PUMPKINS !!!

This is the final product !! Cathryn helped me make the pumpkin topiary. And yes, I had to buy new pumpkins.... I never found the missing ones !!

I can't believe we just celebrated Cathryn's 4th birthday. Where has the time gone ??? Yes her real birthday isn't until Sept. 29th, but we had it early so everyone could swim. What a Fabulous time we all had. I love a good party and what more fun than 15 kids, great ADULT fellowship/conversation and food :o) Ok I could have done without the 15 kids, but Cathryn had a wonderful Birthday. I am not going to tell her that her REAL birthday is coming up in a few days. She would want another party !!!

Last night on our way to church we passed a school bus. Out of the blue Cathryn says, " When Davis gets bigger and can walk by himself and talk then we are going to ride the school bus together." It made me want to cry. I said, "That is so nice of you to say Cathryn, but what if Davis never walks by himself or talks?" She replied, " Oh he will. " What a sweet day that would be !!!

Today was long, tiring, hard and fun all at the same time. We started the day off with 7 tons of rock delivered to the house. The plan was to fill in around the pool. It didn't take long for me to ask, "Who's dumb idea was this?" I was quickly reminded it was mine. Oh Yeah !! I did want rock. Everyone pitched in to help. Even Cathryn worked hard and hung right in there with us. At the end of the day we were all finished and pooped !! I needed some Motrin and Calgone .... The kids were all sound asleep by 7:30 (even Claire). Yes we are exhausted, but it doesn't get any better than sun, swimming and hauling ROCKS :o)

1st Day of Pre-School

Cathryn's first day of Pre-K was today. She was so excited I didn't even have to wake her up (she is not a morning person). We actually left the house on time !!! Of course I had the camera and Cathryn really didn't want to cooperate, but I pressed on and bribed her. She had a great day and informed me that the boy sitting next to her did not listen (she is one to talk). This was my first day with just Claire . We really wanted to go home and get back in bed, but I was already dressed and out, so we went shopping :o) The day went by fast and before I knew it, it was time to pick Cathryn up and get Davis. Tomorrow is another day and I will try and be more productive :o )

1st Day of School

Davis' first day of school was Monday. Thank goodness my family was visiting and helped me get out the door. His school starts 30 mins earlier this year and ends later. I could barely make it on time last year, now I have to start even sooner than before. Add a 7 week old baby on top of that !! It seems that no matter what time I get up I am ALWAYS running behind.

I was DREADING Davis going back to school. There never seems to be enough help, equipment, assistance, school money etc.. for special needs children. Everything is a hassle and I have learned that 90 % of the time you have to fight to get what your child needs. Last year was no exception. Davis was in a new class/school with 9 children, 3 were in wheelchairs and solely dependent on help for everything (Davis was one) and the others were severely autistic. The needs of each child were sooo different. The teacher was NO help at all. She can not lift Davis, help with his walker, his stander, change his diaper or assist with feedings. Their were two aids basically taking care of 9 children.... needless to say I was not happy and things had to change. Davis' needs were not being met and I new it !!

Fast forward to today. Davis' first day of school seemed to be off to a good start. There are only 6 in his class so far and Davis is the only child in a wheelchair. My family was in for a visit so my Dad and I took Davis on his 1st day. It was nice to get another opinion and perspective on the school, teacher and class. I had painted this horrible picture and he wasn't sure what to expect. To my amazement he was pleasantly surprised. I feel sooo much better and a weight has been lifted. We will always have to fight for Davis as we are the only voice he has. But for the moment I can stop worrying and take a deep breath.

Thank you Dad (PawPaw) for all you do for Davis. He may not ever say it, but I know he loves you most !!!

Bird Nest in the Hair

Poor Cathryn always has tangles in her hair. Every morning we go through the same routine. She screams as I try and hack through the bird nest in her hair. She yells, "Mommy your hurting me and then tries to run." I start out calm and try to be gentle, but by the end of the ordeal I usually have to threaten Cathryn and pin her to the bathroom sink!!! I think I lost the Mother Of The Year Award a long time ago....
Cathryn got her hair cut and when she got up this morning the bird nest was manageable. It actually didn't look half bad. I didn't even brush her hair and let her go O' Natural :o)

It took 3 men 4 hours to spread gravel on two sides of the pool !!! What is taking sooooo long. Then they had to take a break and sit on the bench behind the swing set (several times throughout the day). Oh yeah, they did push around some dirt with the bobcat .... Does arriving at 10:00 and leaving at 1:30 constitute a full days work? I really should not complain, but it is very frustrating !!

Summer Time "To Do List"

As Summer fast approaches I am starting to get anxious about my "To Do List". Usually this would not be a big deal. I mean we have ALL Summer to get things done, Right? Not going to happen this year !! OK, I need to get my thoughts/list in black and white so I can see what I am up against... Here goes

1. Take Cathryn to the Dentist
2. Take Davis to the Dentist (I would rather have a root canal than do this)
3. Get Davis fitted for new leg braces : Hummm, I think this is a task for NaNa and PawPaw when they come
4. Paint Bonus room, Cathryn's bathroom and Baby's room
5. Finish Landscaping the yard : tear up shrubs on side of house. I don't know why we planted them, but they Must GO !!
6. Replace the perennials that I planted last year. Shannon dug them up this past Fall thinking they were weeds .... Need I say more
7. Organize children's closet. Pack up clothes
8. Work with Davis daily : therapy, swimming, walking, feeding, etc...
9. Have A BABY in June : Minor detail
10. Loose 30 + pounds
11. Oh yeah, pick out a name for the baby
12. Get baby's room ready (haven't done one thing)

Colors, Numbers and Bears

I have no idea where the last 3 1/2 years have gone. Cathryn has gotten so big sooo fast it is scary!!! Lately I have felt like she is not challenged enough. I will never forget what our Ped. said when she was born, "Because you have a special needs child, don't dumb down your expectations of Cathryn." It took us off guard and we (I) was offended at first. Until he explained. "Don't think everything Cathryn does is gifted or highly advanced. Because Davis is mentally like an infant, you will see Cathryn as a genius.... Even if it is what ALL 3 year olds are doing. Cathryn needs to be challenged and pushed to her greatest potential."

Here we are 3 1/2 years later and I now understand what our Dr. was saying. I am amazed at how the simple everyday activities come so easy to Cathryn and are SOOO hard for Davis. Cathryn attends a two day a week program and seems to love it, but I feel she needs more at home. Today we went to our school supply store and purchased several manipulative's for her to count, sort, stack, group etc... She loves the bears and has played ALL afternoon !!! I am saving the clock and lacing patterns for Friday. I need to be more dedicated and organized ... We can make learning fun and add activities each week :o) Now that the weather is getting warm I will begin the garage sale hunt for great learning tools.

Meet Our New Baby Birds !!

My spring/summer wreath had been on the door less than 2 days when the birds started to build their nest. At first I was a little irritated because they were using pieces of my wreath for their nest. I even put a black rubber snake in the wreath to try and scare them off (I know this seems sooo mean, but I don't have much compassion these days). This obviously didn't work because before I new it she had layed 4 eggs. Last Monday they hatched and only two babies were there. They are cute little fuzz balls and Cathryn loves checking on them. The next day I go outside and one has fallen out of the nest. I quickly panicked and wondered what to do. Eventually, we put the baby back in the nest (after consulting my mom, sister and the internet). As of today they seem to be OK. Cathryn is very concerned and prays for the babies everyday :o)

We have been tring to teach Cathryn the meaning of Easter. After several days of discussing Jesus' death and resurection I asked Cathryn a few questions.

# 1. "Who died on the cross for our sins?" Jesus

#2. " Who is Easter about?" Jesus

Ok we are 2 for 2.... Great !!

#3. "Who rose from the dead after three days?" Cathryn responds, "Daddy"

I asked again and Cathryn explains that Shannon her Daddy rose from the dead after three days !!!

Oh dear this is too much. I think we have missed the mark somewhere .....

Sibling Love and Affection

Over the past three years I have watched Cathryn and Davis interact with each other. I always wonder about their relationship and how Cathryn will respond to her special needs brother. As Cathryn gets older she tries to help... getting Davis' toothbrush and singing to him while I brush his teeth , helping with diapers and getting wipes, wanting to feed him or give him something to drink etc... , but they have never really played together. Until today !! I had Davis on the bed and Cathryn began to wrestle with him. My first response was to say be careful and stop, but I held back. Davis laughed and came right back at her. For a good 20 mins. they rolled, laughed and played. I was amazed at how Cathryn interacted with Davis and wanted him to be aggressive with her. I waited for the Drama to begin and Cathryn to cry, " Davis kicked me or pushed me," but it never happened. I watched in amazement at how both of them enjoyed being with each other and how sibling love/affection was evident !! What a blessing :o)

One sick little girl !!

Two days ago Cathryn was diagnosed with the Flu strand A and strep throat. After having the flu shot in Oct. I was just commenting to a friend on Mon. how blessed we have been this year because neither Davis or Cathryn have been sick... Well did I blow it !! That night she started to cough and by Tues. Shannon ended up taking her to the After Care Clinic (her Pediatrician practically laughed when I called trying to get her an appt.). After waiting 3 1/2 hours we were told she was one sick little girl. I had No Idea !! She didn't act all that different, but sure enough as the night went on she began feeling worse. It seems as if everyone around here is sick. CVS even ran out of the medicine we needed and we had to go somewhere else.... Bless her heart she has five different meds. to take. I feel like it is too much, but what else do you do? Cathryn is a trooper and seems to be doing better. If we could just get rid of that cough !!! I just pray Davis doesn't get it.

Cathryn found several hair bows that she wore as a baby.... She insisted on putting one around her neck and the other on her head !! What a ham for the camera :o)

NaNa and PawPaw sent Cathryn a Cowgirl outfit.... Of course she loves wearing this and must have her Cowboy Rope (which is the string to my PJ's that she pulled out) !!

It's a girl !!

Oh my goodness... Another girl. I am praying now for strength, guidance and a sound mind. Oh yeah, that's what I need every day regardless. I love Cathryn sooo much, but we are just alike. The Lord is teaching me in ways I didn't think were possible. I must admit I was hoping for a boy. This is our last child and because of Davis I wanted another boy. Cathryn also wanted a brother. From the beginning she named the baby "Princess Baby" (even though she wanted a boy) and said, "if it is girl I will drop her." We have until June to change that thought !!! A girl it is.... And praise the Lord everything is fine. The Lord knows what we need and my main concern is Davis. My prayer is that this child will love and accept him. Growing up with a special needs sibling has to be hard and trying at times. Being the parent of a special needs child is hard and trying many times. This is our life and the Lord has chosen each one of our children to complete our family.... And what a family we have !!!

I had to write tonight because Cathryn did the funniest thing !!! Lately we have been having problems following direction and listening. I sometimes feel like she totally ignores me and I have thought many times"What am I doing wrong." Yes she is only three, but everyone knows that 3 is the new terrible 2's.

Well, tonight after asking MANY times for Cathryn to keep her little hoodie on, Shannon finally said," If you take it off again you are getting a spanking!"

Several minutes later Cathryn disappeared and then ran passed us, with NO Hoodie on... Shannon said, " OK you are getting a spanking." And Cathryn started saying No ! Daddy Please. He gave her a choice, Time out or a spanking. To our disbelief and utter shock Cathryn chose a spanking....

The highlight is right before Shannon put her over his knee, Cathryn looked up and said," Be very careful Daddy, very careful."

We about died and didn't know what to do. Shannon popped her three times and at the end Cathryn replied, "Good job Dad, Good job."

What is a parent to do? Like mother, like daughter. I think I am in for a long road ahead......

Cathryn's bible verse for Awanas is "Teach me, thy way, O Lord." Her version is "Teach me, my way, O baby." She is trying :o)

Christmas 2008

What a wonderful year we had !! Many blessings and surprises. Davis turned 7 and Cathryn is now 3.... New school for Davis, new house, new niece (Anna) and a new baby to come in June. I am overwhelmed by God's grace and goodness. We have a wonderful family and I couldn't imagine our life any different. Although there are days (lately) where I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown !!! I am sure that will come :o)

Cathryn is never camera shy !! She loves to pick out her own clothes and pose... As you can see in these pictures she is wearing her own creation. The ensemble includes a grey knit dress with a black velvet jacket, leopard tights and princess high heels. The gold Christmas cone is also her "trumpet/microphone". Where she gets her fashion sense I will never know (hum NaNa).

Who would have ever thought I would be sooo excited about getting a new washer and dryer !! They are wonderful and I am very thankful. This make doing laundry much more fun and enjoyable :o) Now if only I could invent a way to get the clothes folded and put away... My life would be complete !!

Today I desperately needed to fill my van up with gas !! I am terrible about waiting until the very last minute. Lately it was because I was delaying the inevitable. The thought of spending $70 on gas and having nothing to show for it Killed Me. But, every 7-9 days I would have to face the music and fill up my tank. I was in shocked when on my way to church in fumes I saw the sign with gas prices. I had to take a picture !! I filled up my entire tank for $35..... We can all sleep better tonight knowing that !!!

Today we had a chance to see John McCain at a local rally. Less than 24 hrs. before election day he flew into Tri-Cities. The rally was packed and filled with a sea of red. Campaign signs, buttons and flags were everywhere. Shannon and I took Cathryn (Davis was in school) and had a wonderful time. What an experience !!

One of the best memories I have of Halloween is 2 years ago. We were actually living in Jax. with my parents so Davis could be apart of the "MOVE Program" at Neptune Beach Elem. That Halloween Davis was the UPS man and he rode his new tricycle. My parents and I took the kids to a local church carnival and had a wonderful time. What a special night !!! Where has the time gone ???

Table Top Tapestry

Our women's ministry at church has an annual event called "Table Top Tapestry." Each table has a theme and you sell tickets for your table. We all bring out the china and crystal that we never use. And I actually had to look up Emily Post for proper table setting (don't tell mom, she thought I knew that). My theme was "Tis the Season". We had a wonderful time. Great food, fellowship and an excellent speaker. These pictures are mainly for my mom so she can see what I have been talking about :o)

Isn't it Amazing that a child who could not hold his head up until 1 1/2 years old is now riding a horse?? Isn't it amazing that a child who Dr's said was "incompatible with life " is almost 7? Isn't it amazing that a child who could not stand to have anything on his head is wearing a helmet? I could go on and on about Davis. This is a little boy who defies all that is against him. Despite his limitations Davis seems to keep on pushing the envelope. He is a fighter.. And on the days when I am tired, frustrated and don't seem to understand. I am reminded that Davis is a true miracle !! We have come along way and I don't want to ever forget that. Davis never ceases to amaze me !!!

Fall in Gatlinburg/Dollywood

This weekend we all went to Gatlinburg and Dollywood. It was a perfect time to go. The weather was wonderful and the leaves were beautiful !!!

Cathyrn loves driving the cars.....

Davis rode for the first time by himself. I am to big and can no longer squeeze into the rides with him. It was sooo sweet seeing Davis with Cathryn and their cousin Hayden riding together. Davis really enjoyed it !!!!

A few weeks ago I got on a kick to #1 paint Davis' room and #2 make Cathryn a giant chalk board. Since moving in our house last year I have wanted to make the bonus room more "play friendly."

Cathryn loves her chalk board and all it took was a little paint and some white molding!!! I am not very creative so this is as "Crafty as I get."

"It only took an Egg Timer"

Recently, Cathryn REGRESSED with her potty. This summer was a breeze. Cathryn was ready and willing to potty on her own. We made a big deal out of Big Girl panties, read stories and gave reward stickers. All was Wonderful !! Until she went back to her 2 day preschool in Aug. It was as if the potty didn't exist and she wanted nothing to do with it. We were back to negative 10 and I was beside myself. Forward to today... I decided to use the good old egg timer. We devoted several days to "Potty training #2". I dreaded this process mainly because I knew we had to be confined to the house (which I rarely am) and live by the timer. Every 30 min. it would buzz and Cathryn would run to the potty. Needless to say we are going strong and I see a light at the end of the tunnel. Potty training is a new process for me. I sometimes wonder if Davis being in diapers has anything to do with this relapse. Cathryn sees her brother in diapers and doesn't understand why she can't be. I try to explain as best as I can about Davis and why he can't walk, talk, go potty etc... Cathryn just says Ohh, kisses Davis and turns her attention to something else. The sweet innocence if a child. But, for now Praise the Lord for the egg timer !!!
